Hi y’all!
When you travel, you expect to be wowed by grand monuments and ancient history, and my trip to Egypt was certainly full of those moments. But sometimes, the thing that captures your heart is a simple, unexpected discovery. For me, that discovery was a ruby-red, incredibly refreshing drink that I now can’t get enough of: Karkadeh, or Egyptian Hibiscus Tea.
Love at First Sip

My first encounter with Karkadeh was as a welcome drink, and it was love at first sip. In Egypt, this beautiful tea is a staple of hospitality. It’s made from the dried petals of the hibiscus flower, which give it a stunning, deep red color and a unique tart-yet-sweet flavor.
It can be served hot or cold, but everywhere I went, it was served perfectly chilled, which was absolutely perfect for me since I don’t care for hot drinks. It was the most refreshing and delicious way to cool down after a day of exploring in the Egyptian sun.
A Taste of Welcome
Once I had my first taste, I started noticing Karkadeh everywhere. It became a recurring, welcome sight throughout our journey. We were greeted with a cool glass when we arrived for hotel site inspections, it was offered to us at cultural sites like the Papyrus Institute, and it was a staple on menus. It felt like every important moment was marked by this special drink. It’s clearly so much more than just a tea; it’s a gesture of welcome and a beloved part of daily life.

Bringing a Taste of Egypt Home

I loved this tea so much that I knew I had to bring some home with me. The dried hibiscus flowers are easy to find, lightweight, and make for a perfect, authentic souvenir. My connection to the drink became even more special when our wonderful tour guide gifted me with more after our trip—a truly kind gesture that I so appreciated.
The story doesn’t end there! I was so thrilled to find that I can get my Karkadeh fix right here at home. I found a wonderful shop called The Spice & Tea Exchange of Chattanooga, and I was delighted to learn they actually have locations all over the US! It’s a fantastic place where I was able to purchase the ingredients to make it myself. Now, every time I pour a glass, I’m instantly transported back to the magic of Egypt.
