Essential Tips for Visiting Italy: Everything First-Time Travelers Should Know

 Arno River in Florence

Hi Y’all! If you’re dreaming of strolling cobblestone streets, sipping cappuccinos in sunlit piazzas, and exploring ancient cities at your own pace — Italy is calling your name. But before you hop across the pond, this Southern girl has a few real-world tips to help make your adventure smooth, safe, and oh-so-magical. This guide covers everything first-time travelers wish they had known ahead of time — from navigating public restrooms to understanding Italian meal times. And because I’ve wandered those streets myself (sometimes a little lost but always delighted), you’ll find a personal story tucked in here too. Let’s get you ready! Speak a Little Italian You don’t have to be fluent. Italians simply appreciate that you tried.

A few basics:

  • Buongiorno – Good morning

  • Buonasera – Good evening

  • Ciao – Hello/Goodbye

  • Per favore – Please

  • Grazie – Thank you

  • Prego – You’re welcome

  • Dov’è il bagno? – Where is the bathroom?

  • Parla inglese? – Do you speak English?

  • Emergency numbers:   Police 113 • Medical 118 • Fire 115

What to Expect With Italian Bathrooms Bless it — this topic is important.

Here’s the truth:

  • Public restrooms often cost €0.50–€1.00

  • Have coins handy

  • Bring tissues or wipes (TP isn’t guaranteed)

  • Look for WC signs

  • Some toilets require a code printed on your café receipt

Pro tip: Order a quick espresso, then ask, “Toilette?” Most cafés allow customers to use the restrooms.

Apps to Help:

✔️ Flush – Finds the nearest public restroom

✔️ Google Maps – Sometimes shows WC locations too

Spring: Layers, cool mornings, warm afternoons

Summer: HOT — especially July & August

Let’s Talk Shoes… and a Sweet Italian Surprise

Now, Y’all… this Southern girl may have a suitcase full of neutral sundresses and a heart full of wanderlust, but I will never sacrifice practicality for fashion on a trip. My sisters always encourage me to be more “trendy,” and I truly thought Italy might be the place to try it.

The red high heels

And then I remembered… cobblestones are real, ancient, and everywhere. I still remember walking back to our hotel from the Trevi Fountain with My Prince. We took a wrong turn (okay, a few), crossed a little bridge, went down another stone street, wove through alleys that seemed to appear from nowhere — and suddenly… There it was.

The carousel with cobblestones in the foreground

A carousel in the middle of Rome. A twinkling, nostalgic, pure-magic carousel just waiting for us to stumble upon it. And Y’all know I love a carousel. They’re my favorite kind of unexpected joy.

If I had worn the cute Italian footwear my sisters recommended? My feet would’ve been screaming. But because I stuck with practical tennis shoes, I didn’t miss a moment of that magic. Practical wins. Every single time.
