Hi y’all!
There are some places in the world that truly take your breath away, and the Duomo di Milano, the Milan Cathedral, is one of them. From the moment you step into the piazza and see its forest of spires reaching for the sky, you know you’re looking at a masterpiece of God’s handiwork, crafted over centuries.
I recently had the privilege of leading a group to this incredible place. It was a highlight of our trip, but we also learned a very important lesson about the rooftop tour that I feel you absolutely need to know, especially if you or anyone in your group has mobility concerns.
The Breathtaking Beauty Inside and Out
First, let me say that the Duomo is a must-see. The exterior is a jaw-dropping display of Gothic architecture, with thousands of statues and intricate carvings. We spent ages just walking around the outside, trying to take it all in.
The inside is just as awe-inspiring. The scale of it is immense, and the light filtering through the massive, vibrant stained-glass windows is just heavenly. We were able to join a tour to learn about the history, and it was a peaceful, beautiful experience that everyone in our group, regardless of their mobility, could enjoy together.

The Rooftop Reality: A Note on the Lift & Stairs
Now, let’s talk about the famous rooftop terraces. We were all so excited to “walk among the spires” and see the views of Milan. I booked our tickets in advance and made sure to select the option “by lift,” assuming this would be an accessible experience for everyone.
This is the important part: What the ticket description doesn’t make clear is that the lift is primarily for the journey up. And even after the lift, there are still some more steps to climb to reach the highest terraces. More importantly, the only way down is a long, winding staircase of over 150 steps, and part of that descent has no handrail.
When we realized this, it was clear that this part of the tour wasn’t going to work for two of the wonderful ladies in my group who had mobility issues, or for me. It was a moment of disappointment, but their safety and comfort were the top priority. My husband was able to continue to the top, and the pictures he took were absolutely stunning.
Making the Best of It: A Perfect Milanese Moment
So, what do you do when a travel plan goes sideways? You make the best of it! While my husband explored the roof, my two friends and I found a lovely little outdoor café right there in the piazza. We grabbed a table with a perfect view of the Duomo, ordered some snacks and a Coke, and just soaked it all in.
Honestly, it turned into one of my favorite moments of the day. We were comfortable, we were together, and we got to sit and people-watch while admiring the cathedral’s beauty from below. It was a wonderful reminder that sometimes the unplanned moments are the sweetest.
