Anchorage is a lively city where every corner whispers tales of rugged wilderness and vibrant city life. If you’re looking to soak in all the sights and sounds of this Alaskan gem, the best seat in the house is aboard the Anchorage Trolley. We were only in Anchorage overnight so this was the perfect way to see some of the city.
We arrived in Anchorage a little late from the train ride. We had left Denali National Park via the domed train. It was a great but busy day on the tracks, so it would be a tight squeeze to make our trolley ride time. They graciously allowed us to go on the later trolley trip. The location to meet the trolley is easy to find—look for the Log Cabin Visitor Center on the corner of 4th Avenue and F Street. I loved all the flowers around the cabin too!
The red trolleys of Anchorage are more than just a mode of transportation; they’re a journey through history. From the moment you step aboard, you’ll be welcomed by knowledgeable guides who sprinkle their narratives with humor and fascinating facts.
Once we got comfy in the vintage-style seats we were ready. Make sure you keep your camera ready because you’ll be treated to some of Anchorage’s most iconic sights:
- Earthquake Park: Feel the tremors of history as you learn about the 1964 earthquake, one of the most powerful recorded in North America.
- Lake Hood: Watch seaplanes dance on the water at the world’s busiest seaplane base, a spectacle you won’t want to miss.
- Westchester Lagoon: This picturesque spot is perfect for birdwatching and capturing Anchorage’s natural beauty.
- Ship Creek: Dive into the local fishing scene, where salmon run upstream and anglers try their luck.
- Historic Downtown: Hear tales of Anchorage’s founding days as the trolley winds through this charming area filled with local shops and eateries.
There’s something undeniably magical about seeing a city from the nostalgic vantage of a trolley. Here are a few reasons why we love it and think you will too:
- Engaging Narratives: The guides don’t just recite facts; they share stories that bring Anchorage’s past and present to life.
- Convenience: With multiple departures throughout the day, it’s easy to fit a trolley tour into your itinerary.
- Local Insight: You’ll get insider tips on the best places to eat, shop, and explore, straight from your guide.
- Family-Friendly: This is an all-ages adventure, perfect for curious minds both young and old.
