Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is one of Slovenia’s most breathtaking destinations for nature lovers.  We’ve been blessed to visit this area twice. We were there in May of 2019 and again in May of 2023.  This picturesque lake is surrounded by green forests, snow-capped mountains, and turquoise-blue waters that are sure to leave you in awe.

One of the most popular attractions of Lake Bled is the traditional cream cake called Kremna rezina. This cake has a crispy pastry base, layers of whipped cream, and vanilla custard inside, and is sprinkled with powdered sugar. It’s the perfect sweet treat to enjoy while taking in the scenery.  We loved trying this amazing cake!

Besides the cake, Lake Bled offers many adventure activities such as hiking, biking, and swimming. You can also go canoeing or rent a boat to take a leisurely sail around the lake. The island in the middle of Lake Bled is also worth a visit, where you can climb the 99 steps to reach the church and make a wish by ringing the bell.

The Bled Castle – also known as Blejski Grad – is perched on the top of a cliff overlooking Lake Bled. This medieval castle dates back to the 11th century and has seen its share of history, from being a fortress for defense to serving as a prison and even a holiday home for noble families.

The Bled Castle is a beautiful and popular tourist attraction, offering stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore the castle’s museum, which houses exhibits on local history and culture. Visitors can also visit the castle chapel, wine cellar, and castle blacksmith and even try their hand at printing their own postcards in the Capuchin printing house.

Another highlight of the Bled castle is the Knight’s Hall, which is often used for events such as weddings and cultural performances. Moreover, Bled Castle hosts various cultural events throughout the year, including concerts, art exhibitions, and theater performances.

The walk to the castle is steep.  There are stairs to climb, and it is not friendly for those with mobility issues.  We visited in 2019 and were able to experience the castle, but this past trip (May 2023), we were unable to visit due to the rain and the path being too slippery.  I encourage you, if you can – to visit the Castle because the views of the island in the middle of Lake Bled are spectacular from this viewpoint.

Lake Bled is a must-visit destination for those who crave peace, beautiful landscapes, and a taste of traditional Slovenian cuisine.  This is definitely one place you don’t want to skip dessert!  Try the cake – I promise it is heavenly!
